Loan system problems

Situation brief:
Army Cadet Unit Stores System would like computerised stock control/loan
system.
Database hase 3 tables: CADET (holds personal details of cadets-name, rank
etc), INVENTORY (holds details of stock-itemID,description,total quantity),
LOAN (details which cadet has borrowed which item)

My problem:
i cannot get the INVENTORY table to update the quantity, as items are
loanded and returned.
have no idea where to start. any help would be immensely appreciated. thanks
 
just to clarify.this is a college project so im not really allowed to use
whole templates, but can get away with bits of 'em. thx
