I have had my computer upgraded by a third party, now disappeared. Came back
with XP Professional loaded. Now has message stating that this is an illegal
copy. have sourced a legal copy but computer will not allow me to load this
copy, says that it is and older version than allready installed. How do I
load the legal copy?

You are getting the error because the version installed on your computer
is at a higher service pack level than the version you are trying to
install. Two options:

1. Slipstream Service Pack 2 into your legal install disk:

How to slipstream sp2 into XP
http://www.simplyguides.net/guides/using_autostreamer/using_autostreamer.html
- AutoStreamer
http://www.msfn.org/articles.php?action=show&showarticle=49
http://www.windows-help.net/windowsxp/winxp-sp2-bootcd.html
http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm

This is very easy to do. I prefer AutoStreamer.

2. Do a clean install of your system after backing up all your data and
then apply Service Pack 2 and all Updates.

There are obvious advantages to #1 above.

Thanks for the info Malke,
I am also having terrible trouble with the whole system slowing down,
broadband is running at 30 instead of 256 kbps. have cleaned up using
antivirus, spyware and malware. how can i reformat hard drive and start all
over again? As you can see i am very much a novice in this field.

In that case, I suggest you slipstream your left install disk per the
links I already gave you. This will shorten the post-install updating
time considerably. To do a clean install, see:

What you will need on-hand

It is not difficult and if you have everything on-hand and follow the
steps one-by-one, you will be just fine.
