Check your startup items.
Click "Start"
Click "Run"
Type: msconfig
Hit enter.
Click the "Services" tab and check the box at the bottom
to hide all Microsoft Services. Then browse through the
items left and see what you do and don't need.
Next, Click the "Startup" tab. Browse through the items
and see what you do and don't need.
If you have a sound that plays during startup and you
really don't care for it (same with shutdown) go ahead
and take the sound off. Control Panel>Sounds, Speech, &
Audio. Click the "Sounds" tab and remove the starup,
shutdown, logon, and logoff sounds.
Also, I once had a problem where it took 45 min to load
my desktop. Turns out it was my printer. Apparantly the
spoolsv.exe service was damaged. So I removed all the
entries from my registry about any printer (except
default ones that should remain) and removed all
software, drivers, and other items with any printers I
installed. Then reinstalled them to reset the service.
Works great.
If you have virus software or spychecker software, you
may want to have it done once or twice a month rather
than everytime you logon. Chances are you won't be
getting anything too bad plus safe mode is always a good
way to check.
