loading desktop shell problem

xp -sp1a
tried to switched user (fast) - crashed and now cannot load taskbar, windows
explorer or desktop icons , cant right click desktop -under any user, can
run task manager which allows me to run any program but explorer.exe
(although it seems to try as the cpu jumps to around 20%) but nothing
happens. tried safe mode and system restore (initially had to re-regster the
scripting dlls (restore was blank) tried 3 restore points no luck.
have created new users -no luck
re-installed sp1a-no luck,
removed all antivirus software
- i'm stuck all other programs are working (can burn a cdrom load run office
etc)
only evidence are com+ errors in the event log but no additional help on ms
site - any help to prevent me from reinstalling from scratch would be
massive
