Loaded Patch Package -- now Excel & Word wont work

I cannot get Excel and Word to work since installing the
patch. When an Excel or Word document is selected, I get
the Windows Installer box which says "preparing to
install" It sits on my desktop for awhile and then a
message comes up that says: "This patch package could
nto be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and
that you can access it, or contact the application vendor
to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch
package."

Does anyone know what this is and how to fix it?

Similar problems were fixed this last week by doing a repair reinstall of
Office.
