Load images from server instead of embedded in Email?

On many mailing lists where newsletters (HTML based) are periodically sent
out, the images/graphics are not embedded with the Email, but instead are
externally linked and loaded from a web server when ever a recipient opens
an Email.

I've been asked by a workmate about how to go about doing the same thing
when composing Emails in Outlook 2003. From my own digging around, I
haven't been able to figure out how to do this myself. When ever I go
insert -> image and at the opening dialog, input the URL of an image and in
the "insert" drop down box, select "link to file", the image still gets
sent embedded within the Email rather than linked to the image located on
the server.

Does anyone know if it's possible to actually compose Emails in Outlook
where images load from the server rather than actually being embedded in
the Emails themselves?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know. But I think linked images aren't a good idea anyway: a
lot of e-mail-clients doesn't load such images as small 1-pixel-images
are used by spamers to confirm that the address is valid. At my work
loading such images are disabled everywhere -- and some newsletters are
quite a mess without the images.
