Hi,
we have a WinXP SP1 computer. When we delete the LMHOSTS file and reboot
the file is recreated with #PRE entries. How do we stop the system from
recreating the file with these #PRE entries.
Thanks in advance

"The System" is probably not re-creating this file.
This is not a normal behaviour.
If you have deleted it, and it's re-appearing, then some program or script
is doing it.
Perhaps something which runs at startup.

Look at the entries in the file for a clue as to its origin.
Who's machines names are being #PRE-loaded?
Do you recognise the names and IP addresses?
Can you post the contents of the file here?

Is this machine part of a domain? -> is a logon script doing this?
Look through the startup items in msconfig, and see anything stands out.

The IP addresses and names in the LMHOSTS file are ours, I will post the file
when I get access to the the laptop again. We also thought it very unlikely
Windows was recreating the file and have had a look already for startup
tasks, we will look again. After the computer reboots the file can be seen
by connecting to C$ without performing a logon so its not a login script but
the computer is part of a domain.

Thanks

Hi
We recognise the IP addresses and names in the LMHOSTS file as ours. We
have looked for a startup task, nothing found, will look again. The file
gets recreated after reboot before login, we have looked using C$. Computer
is part of a domain. Will post the file asap.

Thanks
