Listing of XP tools commands

P

Peggy A

Does anyone know where you can find a listing of commands you can type into
the Start/Run command box such as msconfig, or msiexec/regserver, etc.? I
keep running into the various shortcuts for system tools, and information
about how to register or unregister a service, for example, but it sure would
be nice to have a list of all the various windows commands/tools that can be
used.

Thanks!

This is a rather daunting list. It probably deserves some qualification:
- You will never type some of the commands in to the Run box because they
are automatically invoked by file association. Adobe Acrobat is an example.
- Some entries are not commands but folders. "Admintools" is an example.
- All files with a .cpl extension are normally invoked via the Control
Panel.
- Some commands used regularly by system administrators are missing from the
list, e.g.
attrib.exe (to find a file or to view/change its attributes)
cacls.exe (to view/set NTFS file and folder permissions)
cipher.exe (WinXP Prof: to display/alter file or folder encryption)
control.exe userpasswords2 (to enable/disable automatic logon)
convert.exe (to convert a FAT into an NTFS volume)
expand.exe (to expand a compressed file from a WinXP installation CD)
msg.exe (to send a pop-up message to a networked machine)
net.exe (to manage just about any networking task)
sc.exe (to control services from the Command Prompt)
tasklist.exe (WinXP Prof: to view all currently running tasks)
taskkill.exe (WinXP Prof: to kill a specific task)
schtasks.exe (to schedule a task)

Have a look at all .exe files in the c:\Windows\System32 folder to see
what's really there. Again you would use only a fraction of these files.

Thanks to all of you! I knew there had to be a listing like this around
somewhere, but in searching, I just didn't come up with it.

careful ... there are a few typos in that list. Here's one that caught
my eye:
IP Configuration (Display Connection Configuration) - ipconfi/all

[left out the "g" in "ipconfig /all"
