I have a file that contains, among other things, names and "classification"
(roughly equal to occupation ala Attorney, Accountant, etc.). I want to
create a list that shows names within classification ala Accountant then
Adams, Jones, Smith, then Attorney then Boswell, Harrison, etc. It seems
there should be a way to do this other than manually. Is there?
TIA,

Yes, use a pivot table. While using the pivot table wizard, layout the
classification in the row area, double-click "classification" and turn
subtotals off (so select "None"), click okay for that and then layout the
names in the row area. You should then see your list nicely laid out just
the way you hoped.

Al,

Yes. Select your table, then choose Data / Pivot table, and click finish. Then drag classification
to the row area, and then name to the row area, and you will get a list of names by classification.

Works quite well, fantastic! However, it insists on totaling by category, an
unwanted feature. Is there a way to turn that off?
TIA

Excellent. Thank you.
