Can Outlook 2003 be made to list the names of the attachments in an email -
either being sent or being received? ( I have seen this work in earlier
editions of outlook where the atachment name was eclosed in < > symbols)
This feature is very useful as it allows attachments to be deleted after
saving them but it still provides a record that the attachments were sent.
By deleting attachments after saving them, one's mailbox size can be kept to
within reasonable size limits.

If your message in in Plain Text format, yes.

Thankyou Brian but the question remains "How do you get a listing of the
attachments? I sent an email to myself in plain text with an attachment but
it didn't result in being listed. Furthermore, if a message is received in
HTML format with attachments, can anything be done to obtain a listing of the
atachments?

Did you open the message and then print it? I tested what I said prior to
posting and I did see the attachments listed.

Open the message and click Format>Plain Text. Now click File>Print. If
that doesn't work, click File>Save prior to File>Print, although I didn't
have to.

Pardon me, but printing the message does not answer our question: How do you
get the <attachment names> to be imbedded in the message being replied to?
That was an extremely useful feature on Outlook 2000 and it floors me that
2003 can't be made to do that.

Printing? Are you kidding? Who prints stuff anymore?
