List of all MS public newsgroups - use a newsreader easily!

J

Jim Eshelman

A current list of all microsoft.public newsgroups is now posted here:
http://aumha.org/nntp.htm

This includes all International newsgroups in multiple languages.

This page was created to make it easier for you to use a newsreader such as
Outlook Express, rather than the more awkward web interface. There is no
longer any need to do complicated account configuration -- one click on a
link sets it all up for you in about a second, in most cases.

Most of the MVPs and other regular participants will recommend newsreader
use rather than webpage use for these newsgroups. Generally, people can find
answers to their questions faster, and navigate the newsgroups faster.

Enjoy!

Thanks Jim, It's amazing how many newsgroups Microsoft has.

You're welcome, Chris. There are 2,252 at the mment -- and that's just
counting the ones available to the general public. There are large numbers
of other newsgroups for Beta testers, partners, MVPs, internal operations,
etc. which aren't even on the list.

How can I find my post in just one, let alone 2,252?
Wes

This isn't for the purpose of finding your post. It's for the purpose of
initially finding a newsgroup.

Use number 1: You want to find a particular newsgroup to post to, say
something on FrontPage. You can search on FrontPage and find possible
newsgroups. Click, you're in, glance around or search to see if there is a
similar question and/or post your question.

Use number 2: You've been using the web interface and want to switch to
using a newsreader instead. You know you were in the Windowsxp.newuser
newsgroup. You can find it here and use the link to launch and configure
Outlook Express.

But the real advantage is in then continuing to use Outlook Express. Once
you have it set up with the newsgroup(s) you want, the best trick is to
click View | Current view and select "Show replies to my messages." At that
point, anyone's response to your post jumps out, and everything else is
invisible. I also recommend (on the same menu) "Hide read messages." This
REALLY helps sort through the crowd. You can unhide them anytime you want
but, otherwise, you only see new stuff coming in and -- the main thing when
looking for answers to your question -- you can filter everythign else out.

Probably a page on how to make the best use of a newsreader would be a good
thing, too. Those of us who have done so for years and years probably do
most of this automatically and not even think about it. Feel free to post
back with any more questions.

I do appreciate your reply, Jim. I apparently put my foot in my mouth, again. I was
being facetious, I left the ) off my last post. I am using OE and liking it for the
most part.
I still appreciate the reply, as will all who read it, especially the CDO users.

O! (lol)

I should have added: With recent virus patterns, it is recommended that you
make one technical change: Go to Tools | Accounts | News, open the
properties of this server, and spam-proof your email address. Here is a
discussion of the risks (which applies to either the web or the newsreader
means of accessing):

Since we're on the topic of how to set up your newsreader properly:
A signature is separated from the body of the message by "-- " (That's
2 dashes and one space) and shouldn't consist of more than 4 lines at
72 characters each.
A nice tool to make OE a more compatible newsreader, and to fix other
bugs, as well as introducing different colors for different quotation
layers can be found at

Yes -- OE-Quotefix does just about everything for Outlook Express that we've
been hoping Microsoft would do with it in recent years! I know about 700
people who have recommended that MS hire Dominik Jain outright! :)

I had the same problem finding my name Wes. I just clicked on "from" -
and the names appeared in alphabetical order - easy! You would have to
remember which newsgroup tho!

Judy;
I was kidding.) Use Ctrl + H. {Show replies to my messages.} Then you
don't have to wade through thousands of posts. Ctrl + H toggles back to Show
all messages.
