Does anyone have any pointers on the best way to run the many excellent
freeware linux applications 'simply' within a windows xp environment
please?

Cygwin? I have it but have never tried it.
 
Topologi linux can be installed on existing fat32/ntfs partition, and the
new version can be started from Windows (I couldn't get it to work, though),
or you can boot to your hdd installation by inserting the cd at boot.

no direct url, but keywords:
* cygwin (windows ported linux-like system: shell, x11, windowmanager
...., installs without admin-rights)
* dsl (damned small linux, can be started within windows, comes with an
emulator, no install needed)
* colinux (installation needed, more complicated than dsl)

Cygwin is command line (although you CAN run KDE from it) - and
installation has NEVER been simple for me for some reason.
