Links update.

I have a file containing external links to another site
and was prepared in Excel 2000. I am opening the file on
other PC's without access to the external links. The file
when opened in Excel 97 and clicking No on prompt for
update links, it shows previous values. When file is
opened on PC with excel XP / 2000 without access to those
links, it asks for update links. Clicking No displays
#NAME?. But in Excel 2k / Excel XP, if "Automatic
calculation" is disabled, then the file shows old values.
How can I get the file to show previous valuse, WITH
AUTOMATIC CALCULATION enabled and clicking on NO TO
UPDATE LINKS?

This is a guess (I don't have xl97 and xl2k anymore).

When you open a workbook in xl2002, it wants to recalculate any workbook that
was created in an earlier version. Maybe that's the problem.

Can you recreate the workbook in xl2002 and save it there?

I've seen some posts that say people have had trouble doing this. They tried
copying the sheets to a new workbook (while in xl2002) and saving from there.

I think others have said that they had to copy|paste the cells
(values/formulas/formats) to new sheets.

But I don't recall ever seeing this problem in real life--so I'm not sure what
the real solution will be.
