I'm running WinXP Pro with SP2 and 512 megs of memory on a Dell Dimension
8300 and since a few days my desktop icons (links) stop responding causing me
to have to reboot, no virus present and defrag done every day...this problem
is quite recent and vey annoying.
i have had very good responses from this forum before I sure hope you can
help me this time. Thank you.

Then try to scan for malwares by downloading this software:
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php

Open a run command and type in:
regsvr32 oleaut32.dll click [OK] after each DLL to reregister
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 shell32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Jscript.dll
netsh winsock reset

Reboot your machine and see if the issue will reoccur.

You don't need to Defrag Every Day, just every two weeks will do nicely.
When you move desktop icons, they do not appear correctly
