LINKS in PPT gone in PDF?

Guest

I'm fairly new at this...so maybe it's me. But I need some advice on how to
do this.

And...I don't know if it's a PowerPoint issue or an Acrobat issue (which I
think it is, but couldn't find anything on the Acrobat forum about this.)

I have PowerPoint 2003 and Acrobat 6.0

I made a fairly simple 30 page PowerPoint presentation that has about 50
links in it...all links go to another slide within the PowerPoint
presentation.

I want to make a PDF of this presentation with all the links intact.
However, after the PDF is made, none of the links are there - much less work.

Am I doing something wrong or do I have to go into the PDF and recreate all
of these links (ugh!).

Thank you for your input!

This will get you started.
Distribute presentations as Adobe Acrobat PDF (Portable Document Format)

Steve also has many other PowerPoint-PDF related subjects in the FAQ.
Browsing there may find more goodies for you to go away with.

Michael:
Thank you very much for the quick response. I'm bummed that I have to spend
$90 on another program just to get my PowerPoint links to work in a PDF
program. That's not in the budget. Guess I know what I'm doing
today...recreating all my links in the PDF version. Hi-ho, Hi-ho, off to
work I go...

Aha! Extra points. You've nailed the perp straight off. ;-)

And bonus points for supplying this info too. Thanks!

First off, how are you creating the PDF? There are two ways of doing it from
within PPT:

- Print to the AdobePDF printer driver; this gives you the equivalent of
electronic paper. The PDF is no more interactive than a piece of paper would
be. That's all it's designed to do, so it's not a bug, it's just the way it
works.

- Use the toolbar/menu that Acrobat installed in PowerPoint; this is the only
way you'll get links converted to PDF. If you don't have the toolbar, it's
likely because Acrobat was installed before PPT. Rerun the Acrobat setup to
sort that one out.

Method two doesn't convert ALL links and interactive settings. As I recall, it
converts anything that PPT treats as a hyperlink; if you can rightclick and
choose Hyperlink/Edit, Acrobat should convert it.

Except when it doesn't. If you've created a link from slide 1 to slide 3 and
then removed slide 2, the link will still work in PPT but will go to the wrong
slide in the PDF, or link to no slide at all. THAT is a bug in Acrobat.

There's some vba code here to repair the problem:
Bad hyperlinks in PDFs from Acrobat
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00744.htm

All that said, I'll mention our commercial add-in, Prep4PDF, that does a more
complete job of converting PPT to PDF using your AdobePDF printer driver.

Steve:
Once again, you come to my rescue!

I initially printed by simply going to the Print to the PDF driver. Thanks
for explaining that one.

So, I tried it again using the toolbar option (yes, Acrobat was installed
AFTER my Office application). It only half-worked.

OK...see if you can figure this one out. To give you an idea of what I'm
working on, here's what I made.

Slides 2-5 have links/hyperlinks that were made from an icon of a camera.
Slides 6-30 are all pictures (actually screen shots of images taken off of
various web sites). So, I told people to simply click on the camera icon and
it would take them to a picture of what is being discussed in slides 2-5. As
I said, it works perfectly in PowerPoint.

Then, on each of the pictures, I made a text box that basically says "to
return to page x, click here" and made that a link.

So, when I remade the PDF using the toolbar option, ALL the links that were
made in the text box ("to return to page x click here") work perfectly...but
NONE of the camera icon links work to send people to the pictures.

I hope I'm painting a clear picture here.

I wish budget dollars allowed me to go to PowerPoint Live next week as I'd
bring this beast in to show you in person. Alas...I'll be here in central
Ohio, working on my links wishing I was in San Diego. Woah is me. (Don't
you feel sorry for me???)

Thanks again, Steve. I really appreciate your help!

I see that Steve has popped in He will probably have more ideas than I on
the subject of PDF.

Now turn around. It's my turn to pat you on the back:

You make it so easy with your detailed descriptions.
OK...see if you can figure this one out. To give you an idea of what I'm

Well, for now, I'm in southern Ohio so if you wanna attach this thing to a paper
airplane or something ... <g>

In case this might have been caused by what I described earlier, try running the
code I pointed you at earlier; run it on a copy of your existing presentation, then
make a PDF again using the Acrobat toolbar.
