Links from express and documents not working

Has anyone any suggestions for this: A typed link in an
email or other document (eg "http://www.microsoft.com")no
longer opens IE6 or brings up the appropriate web page
when I click on it.

I did have a problem with IE6 when it became corrupted
but I managed to resolve it somehow by copying the
explorer files into the desktop and then transferring
them back to the Internet Explorer folder within the
Programs folder. the problem stems from then. I suspect I
have broken or removed a registered link to IE6 but I
have no idea how to retore it.

I am using XP with SP2 installed, IE6 and Outlook Express
