i have these two annoying links to two different websites that have downloaded their links into "my favourites" and shortcuts onto the desktop. They are really irritating as delete does not permanently them

First eliminate any scumware.
See

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each need to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

I've had this happen also. When I delete them from the
favorites and delete them from the recycle bin, the
properites are greyed out, and archive is automatically
selected. I can't find where they're archived and I
can't do anything to get rid of them. It seems to me
it's an XP issue because I can't deselect archive when
deleting them from the recycle bin.

To avoid the problem for now, I setup a new user
account. The links don't get loaded into this account,
but they still get loaded into the owner account.

I still want to know how to delete them.

ok i tried most stuff on that website
although i seem to have run into another problem where IE will not let me download ANYTHING from any location

For example i tried downloading adaware and also a patch for IE from microsoft but i get this message
"Internet explorer cannot download blah.exe from blah.co
Internet explorer was not able to open this interent site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.

also i seem to have got rid of one of the shortcuts from my desktop. I have no idea what changed but i tried deleting it yesterday to try my luck, by sending it to the recycle bin and it hasnt come back... yet..
so now i just have one more to go

this is where it is located by the way
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\MSA64CHK.dll,DllMostrar Matrix_HTML:CoolMP

I had this happen and found out that I had a trojan horse
virus. I'd delete the links from favorites, delete them
from the recycle bin, and they'd show up the next time I
logged on. My home page was also reset to something
other my selected default.

Using Ziff Davis Startup cop, I found the executable that
was creating them (740ed0b7tz) in my WINNT folder, but
even when I deleted this, it would recreate itself.

I finally got rid of it by running Norton antivirus in
safe mode. It found 8 and deleted contaminated files and
I haven't had the problem since. Prior to running it, I
had to disable Windows XP system restore.

Hope this helps.
