Links between Excel & PowerPoint

I have a fairly large PowerPoint file, approx. 100 slides that are linked to
6 different Excel workbooks. The workbooks are updated monthly, renamed and
then I open the PowerPoint file and update the links via Edit>Links, and then
save the file. When I reopen the PowerPoint file the next day, the links have
reverted back to the old Excel workbooks. I then go through all the relinking
and it works fine. This happens every month and I don't know why or how to
fix this. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I would archive the old month's files, and keep using the same workbook name
each month for the updated workbooks. No need to mess with Edit > Links.

I don't do a lot of linking. Instead I use routines that put pictures of the
charts into the slides, usually using a table with relevant information
(i.e., source workbook and worksheet, chart name, target slide, chart
position and size). This gives me a robust, lightweight snapshot in each
PowerPoint file.
