Linking to an Excel Chart from Powerpoint

We are using Office 2003. When we try to pull up the excel chart that
has been saved in Power Point an error message occurs stating that the
server application, source file, or item can't be found, or returned an
unknown error. May need to reinstall application. What is power point
looking for in order to open this chart? Does anyone know how to work
around this?
