Linking objects in a chart

I have been trying to link content in an autoshape to a cell in my
worksheet.
In his book Excel Charts, John Walkenbach says that you simply select
the object then click in the Formula bar, enter the equal sign, then
the cell to be linked. Once you press Enter the object should be
linked and show the content of the cell.
My problem is that every time I do that, instead of linking the
object, I get a new text box in the middle of the chart (with the
linked content) - but I need the content in the object!

Can anybody help?

Thanks

T.

I'm not sure how John did it, but you could:

Select the chart
Click in the Formula bar, and type an equal sign
Click on the cell you want to link
Press the Enter key (a text box will appear in the centre of the chart)
With the Textbox still selected, on the Drawing toolbar,
click the Draw button
Choose Change AutoShape, and select a shape

I have a follow-up:

My problem seems to stem from where the autoshape is located: I have
no problem getting the content of the cell I am linking the autoshape
to if I place the autoshape in the drawing layer.
I cannot, however, get the same thing to work when I place the
autoshape on/in the chart. Every time I press Enter after linking the
object through the formula bar, I get a new text box instead of
placing linked content in the autoshape.

Anybody wanting the snazz up their charts would use this
functionality, so if you know how to solve this conundrum, please
speak up!

Thanks

T.
