Linking .jpg images creates huge file

Starting with a 36KB Word File and Linking two .jpg screen shots (61KB and
74KB respectively) using Insert | Object | create from File | "Link to File"
checked, the document became 7,747KB. The same happens with Publisher. Why
does this happen and can it be avoided? By "breaking" the links, the file
size shrunk to 435KB, which is manageable, but still much larger than the sum
of the three files. I thought that Linking would reduce file size (and make
it easier to update the document)! Help, please!!

Whether you can even insert images in this manner will depend on what
applications and what file associations you have on your PC. Try Insert >
Picture > from file and click the little arrow to the left of the Insert
button and choose Link to File from the sub menu.

This should produce a file size that has no relationship to the inserted
file size.

It'd kind of unfortunate because inserting a picture in the way E.
Gudjohnsen described allows you to double-click the image which launches the
default image editor to allow editing the image. Then when you save the
revised image with the default image editor, the image in your Word document
is automatically updated. This circumvents the limitation of photo editors
that was never resolved all the way back to Word 97. I never have figured
out why Microsoft wouldn't allow me to set Paint Shop Pro as my image editor
in Word.
