linking graphic to cross reference

I am trying to tie captions to figures so they keep together in the text, but
I need to have cross references that will update in the text and ToC if
needed. I cannot use a text box because that does not support cross
references.

I have tried to set up a table format (one column, two rows) but that has
not been successful at all. The table is hard to move, the graphic only
inserts some of the time...

Does anyone have an idea about this? If you just insert a graphic and put
the caption/cross reference in the text, they are not always moving together.

Can you be more specific? I am reading everything I can find about frames,
but cannot make it work. I tried putting the caption in the frame with the
graphic, putting the caption inside a second frame inside the first and also
inserting a second frame for the caption.

I need the graphic and the caption to move together and to work with cross
references for the caption. Thanks.

The graphic and the associated caption should be in one frame.
Create a frame, insert the graphic into the frame, press the
Enter key, type the caption, and format the caption paragraph
with the Caption style (or whatever style you want to use for the
caption). The frame will keep the graphic and caption together,
and the cross-reference function will "see" a caption that is in
a frame (but not in a text box).

Insert both the graphic and the caption In Line With Text. Then select both
and use the Insert Frame button on the Forms toolbar to put them in a frame.
You'll need to remove the frame border (Format | Borders and Shading: None),
and you can double-click on the frame border to open the Format Frame dialog
to fine-tune its position.
