linking forms and subforms

I've searched thru other posts and can't find the answer so forgive me if its
here already.

I have a form based on information from the approval letter table and a
subform based on the approval letter detail table. The common factor in both
is the ALID field. This field is the unique # for each approval letter. When
I input a new entry, 1. it will not allow me to enter data into the subform
until complete the main form, save, close and reopen, and 2. it does not
enter the ALID from the form into the subform.

How do I get the form to allow me to properly complete it without closing
and going back in?

and,

How do I make sure the ALID is inserted in both the form and the subform at
the same time. I tried to point the ALID field on the subform to the main
form but it didn't work.

HELP!

On the subform control's property sheet, data tab, enter "ALID" (without the
quotes) into Master and Child Linkfield

You will need to have a textbox, which can be hidden, for ALID on the
subform. You must fill out enough information on the mainform to create a
record, before moving to the subform.

Okay, this is exactly why I've asked the question because the ALID is entered
into the master and child link field and there is a textbox on the subform
for the ALID that is hidden but when a entry is created and I view it in the
table later, the ALID field on my details table (where the subform pulls its
data from) is blank.

it's in both main form and subform and onthe main form it is an autonumber
field. For some reason the form is quirky, sometimes it won't let me enter
data into the subform, sometimes it will.

Is it possible that the form is just corrupt?

It is possible. Here's some corruprion advice:

First, always work on a copy of the database. Working on the original may
make it impossible for a repair service to fix it.

Download a copy of JetComp.exe:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;273956

Try backing up your forms as text with the undocumented SaveAsText
LoadFromText functions:

http://www.datastrat.com/Code/DocDatabase.txt

Also have a look at the Microsoft KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;209137

Then have a look at Tony Toews' Access Corruption FAQ at:

http://www.granite.ab.ca/access/corruptmdbs.htm

for some suggestions. Unfortunately, some corruption cannot be fixed - you
may need to create a new database, import what can be salvaged, and recreate
the rest.

Although it's a paid service, Peter Miller does an outstanding job of saving
corrupt databases. Try this URL:
