Linking an Excel 2003 document copied to a Word 2003 document

Hi, Everyone.

I have Office 2003. I copied an Excel 2003 document using the button on the
Standard toolbar, and then I opened a Word document and clicked on Paste
Special > Paste Link > Microsoft Office Excel Worksheet object > OK. The
Excel worksheet was successfully transferred, but when I made a change in a
cell of the Excel source document, that change was not reflected in the
corresponding cell in the Excel copy in the Word document. Is it possible to
make a change in the source document and have it reflected in the destination
document? If so, how?

Thank you very much.

It is possible.
Open and make changes in your Excel source document by double clicking in
the word document.

Thank you, Tim.

I double-clicked in the Word document, which took me back to my Excel source
document. I changed the contents of one cell in the source document and then
went back to the Word document. The change did not take effect. What could be
the problem?

Works perfect for me.

THE PROBLEM IS YOURS!!!

You don’t even need to double click in the word document.
Just save the Word and the Excel documents> then open and edit the excel
document>close and save it>open the word document>When a message box pops up
asking you “This document contains links that may refer to other files. Do
you want to update the links†click yes and that’s it.
Give me email address and i will send you my working files.

Tim, your instructions to "Just save the Word and the Excel documents> then
open and edit the Excel " made it work. Originally, after doing the Paste
Special to the Word document, I did not close the two documents and then
re-open and edit the Excel document. Thanks a million.

Hi,

Assumption: Open both the Microsoft Excel Worksheet in the Workbook and the
MIcrosoft Word document, then follow the procedure described below.

Do the following:

1. Select the cell you want to Paste from your Microsoft Excel worksheet.
2. To move to your Microsoft Word document, Press Alt+TAB and select the
Microsoft Word Icon.
3. On the Edit menu in the Microsoft Word document, click Paste Special.
The Paste Special dialog is displayed.
4. Click the Paste Link option and choose as Choose Microsoft Excel
Worksheet object.
5. Click Ok to return to the Word document.
6. Click the object you pasted in the document.
7. On the Edit menu, click Link. The Links dialog box appears.
8. Select the source file and click to selct the Automatic Update option
under the Update method for selected link.
9. Click OK to return to Word document. Now when ever you modify the cell in
the Microsoft Excel document or double the object in the Microsoft Word
document, the changes will automatically show the staus of the updated
information.
10. Save the Microsoft Excel Workbook and the active MIcrosoft Word document.

Thanks, Challa. That was a very comprehensive response. I have printed your
instructions out and will now open an Excel and a Word document and apply
your instructions repeatedly until I master the process.

Again, thank you very much.
