I am drafting a document in which I would like to duplicate text from an
earlier portion of the document. I need to make several references like this
throughout the document. Is there any way to "link" text to earlier text so
that if I change the first text all the subsequent text changes as well?

I'm using Word 2003 and, in this version, the answer is yes. Copy the
paragraph you want repeated, then paste special, paste as link. If you don't
see the text automatically updating, go into print preview and right back out.
