Hello All,

I have spreadsheets that are updated by other
spreadsheets so I have named all the ranges and linked
them into Access. I am just wondering what the
limitations are on linked tables. I am pretty certain I
cannot change the properties of the tables but what else?

Thank you in advance!

Natalie

You have to be careful that you don't exceed the capacity of Excel (which I
think is 64,000 rows). That's something that Access won't do for you. You
also must be careful that one 1 user at a time can access the Excel tables
because Excel doesn't have a multi-user locking mechanism. Lastly, you must
make certain that no one adds headers or changes the Excel files in any way
that will make them unreadable as tables.

I use Excel links for appending and manipulating data to Access tables, as a
temporary measure. I would not use them for permanent data storage,
especially if there is more than a single user to the database.

Thank you for your reply Marvin. It's given me something
to think about! The thing is only the people at head
office have Access on their machines. The people at the
various branches only have Excel. The people upstairs
won't pay for it. Do you have any tips?

Cheers

Natalie
