linked tables dissapear

I am working on an Access database that has linked tables in the 'front'
(Production folder) and 'backend' (Maintenance folder) on a network. When I
close the Access databases down, the linked table in the (Maintenance folder)
is gone. The linked table in the (Production folder) is still there, and
naturally the Queries and Macros are non functional. What is the problem?
How can this be repaired/fixed/stopped. The problem is beyond my knowledge...

A back end database really should not have any linked tables.
Where is the database it is linking to?
