link to TOC on every page of document

Hi,

I'm writing a proposal and one of the requirements is that a link to
the table of contents must appear on each page. Links in the header/
footer aren't clickable in Word and are also not clickable when
converted to PDF format. Any ideas on how to accomplish this are
greatly appreciated.

This is an unworkable requirement. In recent versions of Word, you can
display a GoToTOC button on a toolbar, and this is much the simplest option,
but it would have to be added by each user. Acrobat has a different setup,
but its navigation pane should be helpful.

(Note that what I describe below as the "Bookmarks Panel" may be what Suzanne
refer to as the "navigavtion pane").

It sounds as if the document is going to be distributed in PDF format and my
guess is that the only purpose of the go-to-TOC-link is to make it easy for
the readers to go to the TOC from every page.

If that is correct and if you use Adobe Acrobat Professional (or Standard)
for creating the PDF file, the PDF file can be set up to automatically open
with the bookmarks panel displayed - if all your TOC entries are set up to be
converted to bookmarks, this means that the TOC is available from every page
just to the left of the page - the readers do not even need to scroll up or
down the page to click a TOC link as they would have in case of a link
directly on the page. They can see the TOC and any page at the same time. I
find that this is a more reader-friendly solution - and it is easy to
implement.

I cannot tell how to do this if you use another program for creating the PDF
file but in Adobe Acrobat, you will find the option in File > Document
Properties > Initial View. Select to show “Bookmarks Panel and Page†(the
user interface differs a little between versions). In the same place you can
also set e.g. the initial zoom percentage.

Thanks, Lene. Yes, that's what I meant. I'm not exactly a power user of
Acrobat (I can about click on the Convert to PDF button in Word, and that's
it).
