Chris

Hi, sorry for the cross post but I have the update for Hyperthreading for XP
home and pro. I have posted this on the bottom of my personal web site.
http://www.ckccomp.plus.com/site/PAGE2.htm
It will be in SP2 but for those that can't wait here it is.

Why on earth don't they let people download it? If it's performance
related, I would think it would be publically available for anyone to
download.

As they said they haven't tested it very well. Probably a developer made a
quick solution for people who can't wait ( that have a problem that is
important enough to try a not very well tested fix).

I would rather wait for SP2.

You got the right idea, I think.

I've noticed a problem. Every once, in a while, when I go to execute IE 6
my CPU will hang. Checking task manager shows two instances of Regsvr32
both using about 50% of processor time. Almost as if the virtual and real
processors are fighting over that process.

I haven't got that symptom, yet. Does that patch help you at all?

Perhaps I am reading it wrong, but knowledge base article 815227 is
for a computer with more than one logical processor; not for a
hyperthreading computer with only processor.

"SYMPTOMS
A program that uses large mapped file views to share information
between two processes may experience a significant performance
decrease. The performance degradation occurs in the UnmapViewOfFile
function.

CAUSE
This problem occurs if you install Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) on
an Intel Pentium 4 computer that has more than one logical processor."

HT = dual processor technology. Winblows' HAL sees it as 'two'
processors. One virtual, other real. However, disabling HT in CMOS will
allow Winblows to see it as a single processor re HAL. I've noticed a
considerable performance loss, by doing that.

I don't have SP1 installed. From what I read in the KB, this is
'supposedly' only a problem for SP1 machines. However, this is not my
imagination :)

Why would they let people download it?
After all, they already have your $, right?
If they fix it in the next verison of windows, they might even get
more of your $, right?

I'd try one of these (same thing, alternate locations):

Heh, yes, I forgot MS is really a marketing company with a software house
bolted on the side.

| Still one of MS's beta testers? :)

Right, Adrian. Microsoft users are not the only beta testers around.
RedHat
has gone through about 3 versions - 7.2, 8 now 9 - each with plenty of fixes
to patch in since WinXP appeared on the scene.

Difference being, I don't pay full retail price for the O.S., like the
MS beta testers do. It's completely free to download a Linux ISO
image and burn it to CD. But granted, there are bugs with all
O.S's...

Yep but who is PAYING $100+ a seat to beta test the OS?

Interesting that MS is still selling the same version yet linux has had at
least 3 newer versions, not just patching at the old one? And the list at
MS is just the problems they admit existed at the time of SP1! What about
all the problems SP1 caused? :)
