link to other workbooks

In a workbook X I am getting data in a cell from another workbook Y
using a formula. When I make a change in workbook Y (for example add a
row), it does not get reflected in the formula in workbook X. Is it
normal?

Hi
what do you expect (change of the cell reference?). If one of the
workbooks is closed how should Excel be able to change the cell
reference. So this is normal

Just to add to Frank's reply:

Can you have both workbooks open when you make that change?

If there aren't too many values coming back, maybe assigning range names to
those cells would make it work better. (If you retrieve lots, then this might
not be a good fit, though.)
