Link to files on Desktop

Hi,

I have a lot of experience in every MS program except
FrontPage. I'm completely stumped, and am looking for
help. I have set up an Apache HTTP server on my Windows
NT 4.0 machine. It works beautifully. I have started
developing my website, and the pages all work fine as
well. The only problem that i have encountered is that
for some reason, I just cannot build a hyperlink to my
files on my desktop. Using the cheesy little index.html
page that is the default (you know the one - Parent
Directory, subfolders, last modified column??) I can view,
download, etc. my files no problem. However, as soon as I
try and reference the files in FrontPage, it all goes to
hooey.
Any suggestions???
My hyperlink reads something along the lines of C:\Program
Files\Apache Group\realdocs\________\__________.pdf, or
the other version that I tried was file:///Program
Files/Apache Group/realdocs/________/__________.pdf...
Oh, btw, I'm using MS Frontpage 2000 on a WinNT4.0 machine.
Thanks to anyone who has suggestions.......

You need to import the files into a location inside your web and then link to them.

I've tried moving the files to the folder on my desktop
that is housing everything that I want to show up on my
site. Again, using the index.html that automatically
comes up with the Apache server, the files are available.
However, as soon as I link them using FrontPage, they are
no longer available. I guess my problem is not with where
to put them, but how to create the hyperlink, and how to
change the overlying text (i.e. if the link is to a file
for FrontPage help, I don't want C:\______________ but
rather "Click Here for FrontPgae Help" or some such thing.
Thanks,
Chris

Front Page uses a concept called "webs". They are special
folders on the client computer which contain all of the
files (pages, pictures, etc.) which constitute your
website.

Therefore the first step in creating a website is to
create a "web". You do this by File | New web within
Front Page.

Any files that you want to wind up on your site must be
created or placed inside the "web" ... even if they are
someplace else on your C drive, desktop or wherever.

Anything you do on your web should be done from Front
Page not Windows Explorer as Front Page does a lot of
housekeeping of your web for you .. Windows Explorer does
not.

When it comes time to publish your web to your host, from
Front Page simply File | Publish.

I hope this helps in your understanding of the logic of
the Front Page program.

A server will not display files that are linked to from a "drive," it will only display / serve
files that area available via and absolute or relative http:/ hyperlink.
An absolute hyperlink being http://domain.com/filename.jpg and a relative link being
src="filename.jgp" if the file is in the same location as the htm page calling it or
src="/filename.jpg" if it is in a folder at the same level as the htm page calling it.

Where is the web located that you are editing in FrontPage?? In the apache server or another
location on your machine.

The files for the web are in my folder which the Apache
server is pointing to. however, I didn't know I needed to
create a "web", so this may very likely be my problem.
Being a newbie (I started Front Page for the first time
this morning), I figured it would be a typical microsoft
program - click new, and away you go...
Thanks for the help - I guess I'm going to here at work
for a little longer than I planned.
