Link Text box to a cell in the spreadsheet

Hi,

Is there a way to link the value displayed inside a textbox in a spreadsheet
and link it to a cell in a spreadsheet? Tks - SB

Castor's reply assumes that you placed the text box from
the Control Tool Bar and not from the drawing ToolBar.

To use the Control Tool Bar, choose, View, Toolbars,
Control ToolBoxs and insert the text box from there.

I have a related problem since I inserted several textboxes from the Draw
toolbar in the graph page. However, when I use Peter's suggestion of
View>Toolbars>Control Toolbox, most of the icons are "greyed-out". As I add
data, I've been forced to relocate the texboxes manually, which is effective,
but how should I "link" to a specific cell in the Data page? BTW, I'm using
Excel 2000 (9.0.4402 SR-1).

I created a chart sheet.
I put a textbox from the Drawing toolbar on it.
I selected that textbox.
I typed:
=sheet1!a1
in the formulabar

and I saw what was in A1 of sheet1 in my textbox.

Thanks Dave, but I want specific information in the text box, not "=Data!a1293"
or did I misunderstand you?

When I typed:
=sheet1!a1

I saw the text that was in A1 of Sheet1.

(did you include those double quotation marks?)

My particular Column A consists of dates. I found my mistake (NOT the quotation
marks!), but I find that when I make the proper entry into the formula bar, the
date appears as it should, but I cannot type anything else into the text box.
The text box is of no value to me if I can't type into the box! Am I doing
something wrong here?

That's the way the textbox from the Drawing Toolbar behaves.

You could have the textbox update whenever you change A1, but then you'd lose
the data you typed in.

You could have A1 update with the text in the textbox (when you activate the
sheet, say).

But I'm not sure what you really want and even if what you want is possible.

Dave,

Sorry, I should have been upfront with what I'm trying to do. My spreadsheet is
a simple list of glucose meter readings by date. Column A is the date; Column B
is the reading. The chart is a simple line chart of that data (levels vs. date).
I used the drawing toobar to insert a textbox in several places to illustrate
where certain events took place - events that have a possible bearing on the
readings.

When I add data to the spreadsheet, update the chart, and change the category
axis (date), I want the textbox (with my particulat annotation) arrow to point
(be linked) to the date the event took place. Currently, I have to move it
manually.

Maybe this can't be done.

Maybe you could put a button on the chart. After you make whatever change you
need to make, you click the button and it updates the textbox with the new
value/date.

But there might be something even easier. I don't work enough with charts to be
helpful, but maybe you could post in the .charting newsgroup and you could get
real help.

Good luck,
