Link Excel 2003 to Access 2003 Not Working For Me

Sharpie King

Greetings,
I have a Access mdb Database that I have created a Query on that I wish to
Link to a Excell Spreadsheet.

My Desired end result will be that I can have a computer and screen on a
network, monitoring live changes to the query as data is entered into the
access database throughout the day on a shared network (only 1 other computer
will have a access level above Read Only).

I am building this database and worksheet on a computer that is not on the
network. I am in a different location. I will install the files on a the
network after I have completed building the database and spreadsheet.

I have tried to a couple of different methods to no avail.

First I have tried to copy the Access query (with the query closed) and then
pasted link in Excell on a new worksheet. That worked fine it displayed
appropriate data. To change the autoupdate settings in order to autorefresh I
had to change the properties to shared. But it gives an error that I cannot
share the .xls file because it contains array formulas that are linked to
other workbooks.

In another workbook, I have tried to Import External Data in Excel choosing
the appropriate table/query with the Access database closed. That worked
also, but, when I tried to open the Access file it would omly open as a Read
Only.
I am Learning Access as I go, so I am not familiar with all of the functions.

So, is the fact that I am building and testing these database and
spreadsheet linking functions on a isolated computer, causing functionality
differences that would not be true when installed on the network?
Is there a key process that I am missing?

I just need to get a spreadsheet to monitor an Access query live - while
other users are updating the shared database.

I have been working on this for over a month and I really need some
assistance.

Once upon a time, you could update Excel spreadsheet data from Access, but
because of a patent infringment lawsuit, this functionality was removed. I
think you're out of luck.

But why are you using Excel anyway? Why not use Access. It's possible to
create an Audit Tracking application in Access. On my website
(www.rogersaccesslibrary.com), is a small Access database sample called
"AuditTrail.mdb" which illustrates how to do this.
