Lines left on screen from winxp bubbles

Occasionally lines are left on my srceen from windows notificaition bubbles.
i.e. from network not connected or icon clean-up wizard.
The shadow of the bubble will stay on screen no matter what window is open.
I have to reboot in order to get rid of the line.
Does anyone have ideas on the cause and remedy of this?

They are left by virtual memory (page files). You can usually clear them
by pressing the function key F5 (refresh).
 
I have tried that to no avail.
