Line width

Some Internet sites show text that fits the width of the screen. I would
like to reduce the window size, and have the text justified in the
smaller window. This way it is easier to read.

At home, I use Opera, and this works fine. At work I have to use IE, and
this is my problem.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

"Doctor, doctor, it hurts when I do this!"

"Well, then, don't do it."

Seriously, either install a real browser on your work computer, or if
that's not allowed then you'll just have to live with IE and its
misfeatures.

Why do people design web pages so wide?

Why do some people like the color red over the color blue?
Why do some people feel the need to have a sports car over the economy
vehicle?
Why do some people support the death sentence while others are opposed to
it?
Why do some people go to a Catholic church, others to a Baptist church,
others none at all and so on?

People design web pages (well-designed web pages) to fit the largest
customer base they can. Statistics have changed over the years from them
needing to design for 640x480 screens to 800x600 screens to a now more
common 1024x768 screen. It's all about getting the most out of what you got
and just pure and simple personal preference.

Because they have a fundamental confusion between the World Wide Web
and desktop publishing.

Sometimes out of inexperience and accident. One of mine is too wide
and I'm too clueless to know how to fix it (major learning curve, in
my case) - and it bugs me everytime I look at it.

Don't specify table widths in pixels (or at all, for that matter).
That's the most common cause of the problem.
