line number problem

Both me and my friend use MS 2003 word. he send me a file, and I tried to add
line number to it. First of all I cannot see the line number when I put
through page setup, but whebn I convert it to pdf I see the line numebrs on
the left side messed up with text, even I changed the left margins but the
numbers also changed position and still a mess.
Any suggestion?
 
Another problem is that I cannot see the line numbers inside MS word unless I
convert it to PDF and then see it inside Adobe reader.
 
Either you need to update the printer driver or the document is somehow
damaged. If you try adding line numbers in a new, blank document, then does
it work properly?
 
Yes it does a good job for a new blank document

Is the document you're working on in Print Layout view? You wouldn't be able
to see the line numbers in Normal/Draft view.
