That should be a function of your sound device or card. Open up its
PROPERTIES box (perhaps by a right-click on the speaker icon at the
bottom-right of the screen) and look for a MUTE button or switch. Try
turning it off (UNmuted). Also check documentation, if any, for the
sound device.

Also some newer cards and MB's that have audio built in have the
ability to make the ports take on different functions depending on
what's plugged in.
This one I'm still trying to figure out:
I have a 5-1 speaker system that worked fine under XP. Once I had
Vista up and running, no sound at all. Only after I started pulling
cables and switching which port they were plugged into did everything
work again. Why upgrading to Vista would cause this I'm still
scratching my head.
Dell has sort of acknowledged that this is a problem with many of their new
PCs with Vista. My C521 has no way to monitor Line In. Dell's tech support
can't find it. There is a Dell forum about this problem.
