line in footer

I bought the MODD book (paid for itself in minutes). A design template has a
line across a footer above the page number. I'd like to change the color of
that line. How can I do that? Word 2003.

Assuming it's a border, select the paragraph that has the border, go to
Format | Borders and Shading, change the color selection, and then click on
the appropriate border in the preview picture.

Thank you Suzanne. I tried that over and over. Just tried again and this
time it worked!

The part that I've always found confusing is that just changing the line
style or color or weight isn't sufficient; you have to actually apply it to
the preview picture before it takes effect. This makes sense when you think
about it since you might want different borders (top, bottom, left, right,
inside, outside) to be different colors or styles or weights, but I still
have a tendency to forget to apply it.

I spent two long days trying to figure out how to get this to work. After
your response to my question put me on the right track, I got it to work and
kept playing with it to repeat it in other places in my document. I learned
that if I first selected 3D (I'm assuming any other selection would work the
same way) and then came back to select the Custom, it would then apply it.
Having paragraph in the Apply box and leaving it there wouldn't work.

I really appreciate your help with this.

I'd be inclined to select None (in order to start from scratch); you can
then apply whatever borders you want, clicking on the preview to apply each
one. One other trick that's useful to know is that the Inside Horizontal
border isn't available unless you have more than one paragraph selected, and
the Grid and All presets and Inside Vertical border are available only in
tables and even then have no effect unless you have more than one cell
selected.
