limits to amount of text in a cell

I have created an information spread sheet designed to
provide a detailed descriptions about a topic. When I
enter the descriptive information into a cell, it does
not all appear when I move on the the next cell. This
happens in spite of enlarging the cells, changing the
font size or other formating techniques. The only
indication that there is a limit is when I spell check
the information and it tells me the "formula is too
long." What is the character limit per cell and how do I
get around it?
