I've used and setup networks for several years, but now have a new one. I am
trying to transfer files between a Win XP and a Win ME machine. I can get
about 2-3 files transfered and then whichever machine started the copy
process loses its network connection and must be rebooted to use the network
again. Both machines can down load multi-megabyte files off of the internet
but as soon as I try to transfer files between the two, things shut down.
Any suggestions?

How are the machines connected (network structure)?
How big are the files?
What version/service pack level is XP?

The machines are connected to a router that is also their connection to the
internet, however I have also tried just a normal hub with the same results.

The files can be several 200Kb jpgs or several 8Mb powerpoint files with
lock up happening after about 20-30 seconds either way.

I identified the problem running SP1 and decided to updated to SP2 and
updated the bios in the router with no apparent improvement.

Things to try:

1. Swap out the nic on the older machine for a new, known-working one.
See if that fixes things. If it doesn't, swap out the nic on the other
machine.

2. If #1 doesn't help, swap out the ethernet cables.

3. Change the router ports.

I'm guessing that one of the nic's is bad, probably the one on the ME
box. Do your testing by changing one thing at a time and testing after
each change.
