Limit Characters in REF Field

I am using a REF field to reference a specific text form field. I want to
limit the number of characters to 8 that are placed in the REF field and
truncate the remaining characters if any. Can this be done?
 
Hi Critter. Not possible with field coding, as field functions don't include anything for string manipulation.
