Lightened gridlines, now borders are that color now, even though

I changed the border color from "automatic" to black. I lightened the
gridlines because I still want to be able to see them, but the black thin
borders don't show up on the regular-color gridlines.

Now, it seems the problem is worse than before I changed anything.
(Remember, I DID change the border color to black from automatic.)

Any ideas?

I prefer the lighter gridlines too (Tools>Options>View tab) Grey-25%. It
helps the data stand out better.

If you've already got the gridlines of the unused cells changed to the
lighter color, go back (Format>Cells>Border tab), turn off and back on the
borders and "ok" the cells you want darker.

If that doesn't work, you may have Conditional Formats assigned to the cells
that are acting up. Select those cells, open the Conditional Formatting
window (Format>Conditional Formatting) and delete the conditions.
