Question I was at lunch with a group of friend all into computers.. We
got to discussing the arrangement of a bought XP full PRO license.
Then a small "discussion came up"

Some say that per microsoft if you have two computers you can legally
install your purchased copy on both machines ie if you have a desk
ypop and a laptop etc is this true?? I have not heard of it but one of
the guys is very thikn into software and microsoft products. Can
anyone confirm this? YThanks

One legal install per computer. You cannot install the same copy to a laptop
and a desktop.

Nobody can confirm it because it's false.

No. The rule is quite clear. It's one copy (or one license) for each
computer.

There's nothing new here. This is exactly the same rule that's been in
effect on every version of Windows starting with Windows 3.1. The only thing
new with XP is that there's now an enforcement mechanism.

With SOME Micros~1 software you can install on (1) desktop AND (1) laptop.

Not with XP.

No, it's not at all true. Some Microsoft _application_ EULAs
permit the licensed owner to install the product upon one desktop and
one portable computer simultaneously, but this has *never* been true of
Microsoft operating systems' licenses.

I can't help wondering how this question even came up. Has no one in
that group of friends "all into computers" never read a EULA?

If you purchase an MSDN Universal/Premium license for around $2000, you can
install on 10 PCs.
Plus you get everything Microsoft makes, betas, updates and freebies for one
year.

MSDN software is technically for "testing" purposes, not just a global
license to run on everyone's production machines.
