I know that with XP you could purchase one copy and run it on all your
machines at home. Can you do the same with Vista Home Premium Ed. Can I buy
one copy of Vista and run it on my two machines at home?
Thanks, dave

Hi Dave,

You couldn't with XP and you can't with Vista. One license for each machine.
You may be confusing the license with that of OfficeXP which allowed for
installation on one desktop and one laptop.

Neither Windows Vista or Windows XP permits installation on more than one PC
using the same license. You can purchase additional Vista licenses here:

Nope, one license = one machine. It was the same with XP and all previous
versions of Windows. It's just getting stricter and much harder to use them
on multiple machines.

We in the UK already have to pony up around double for the software, we
are also refused the family discount :( .

Yeah it's a bit of a con. In the US they get a copy of Ultimate and two
copies of Home Premium for the price we pay for one copy.

Richard,

If you meant that legally you couldn't - you're right. But technically - it
certainly is possible. A little history. A few years back, Dell as well as
several other OEM's supplied a CD (OEM version) with their PC's that were
not BIOS locked nor hardware locked in any manner and did not require
activation. After awhile, that little secret got around (took about two
seconds for the world to know it...) and copies of those CD's became
abundant. You probably got the spam email telling you how to purchase WinXP
w/SP2 for half price with a valid activation code. Well, not really, the CD
did not require validation since it was OEM anyway.

Then there were the key generators and the volume license keys that made the
rounds and WinXP became a resounding success. I've read several accounts
from magazines such as Forbes and Business Weekly where it was stated that
if WinXP had not been pirated - it would not have the market share it has
today - and they quoted some MS exec's agreeing with that assessment.

Now the OP said "you could purchase one copy...." and he didn't say from
where.

Erm, I think you mean "shouldn't". If you wait 120 days between
installations, you *can* do it and get activated and genuinized. That
said, I don't recommend this method nor would I do it as generic OEM
versions of Windows are not that expensive and if both computers, for
some reason, have to have XP reinstalled, you could be SOL.

Technically I could rob a jewelry store also.

Is this verified for Vista too? I knew it worked that way for XP, but
wasn't sure if it carried forward.

On a complete OT sidenote:

I am so incredibly embarrassed and was wrong for referring you and
anyone else to the Vista test drive site! I thought I had gone on it
before (but was mistaken). I went into it just to check something out
real quick today - and I was so incredibly disappointed by everything
you could not try out in there!

Anyway, sorry for the time waster!

I don't know and I'm not sure if anyone does.

Not for me. I shy away from sites that require a log on.

Personal opinion? Microsoft is making up the fines they're paying the
EU gov't.

That being said, I'm being the EU gov't 100% on this one.

I don't think so because Apple, Norton, Dell, Crucial, Kingston, et al
do the same thing, equate the wimpy dollar with the pound and euro. It's
called "greed" and assuming your paying European customers can't do
arithmetic.
That being said, I'm being the EU gov't 100% on this one.

So I am.

You are such a wise man! :)
I look forward to benefiting further from your wisdom.
