Tom found an old freeware version of Code-Genie and indicated that the
help file stated that the program is free and freely distributable.
I guess that, till the application went from freeware to shareware, this
policy was unchanged but I cannot say that for sure. We (and especially
Karen) are still looking for the LFW of Code-Genie.
In the meantime, I downloaded Tom's find, the freeware 3 release with date
August 2002, from
http://adultxf.250free.com/descarge/cgenie30.ZIP.
I was going to immediately upload a copy to my web space, but am pausing
a minute, after finding my investigation of this package turned out a
weird complication.

: Code-Genie V3.0 for Windows 98/ME/NT/2k/XP
: Freeware. Freely distributable.
[2] Help/About
Nothing pertinent

: Code-Genie V3.0 is FreeWare i.e. you can freely use it for your needs
: without charges of any kind. Code-Genie is an Internet-only program.
: It means that you cannot distribute the program in any form without
: asking us first. But you can place a link to the program (
http://www.code-
: genie.com/cgenie30.zip) on your site, and we encourage you to do this
: if you like it.
So we have here that there are two pertinent (re distribution) docs in the
package, each contradicting the other.
Perhaps some here will have an opinion on that?
As to that which is stated in this second part, I do have some observations,
and opinion. I'm just going to sort of ramble (hope not to sloppy), and hope
that from there, can get followup of other opinions.
My opinions are very centered around this fact: The old domain is no longer
owned by the author, there is no new domain, and the development has ceased.
It appears to me that the story is that the author was soliciting feedback
(btw, in the chm, there is request for suggestions) -- the free beta testing
practice. And: monitoring downloads. During that point in time where he was
planning to gage when to flip his developing freeware over to market. That's
all done and past, now. He no longer needs freeware beta testers, nor to
gage downloads.
At this time the link
http://www.code-genie.com/cgenie30.zip is being
abused. The person that now uses the domain sends over a trojan.
I don't mean that it's so bad as a virus, but that it is a trojan: There
are links all over the web to the code-genie text editor, pointing to that
URL, and one receives something else instead. Some sort of krap (Kerio alert
when I launched it), some sort of stupid trick. It would be hard for me to
believe that, given this situation, the author would today want that
interested parties end up with the trojan file that is linked to that URL.
That is, it's my opinion that the text in that CHM does not reflect what
one would reasonably expect to be the current wish of the author.
Also, again speculating on author's interest. At this time, there is not
currently developing shareware of Code-Genie against which a freeware
release would seen to be competing. Presuming this as the primary reason
that authors like to try to remove their earlier freeware releases. So,
his freeware licenses aside even, it's that I don't think there would be
the least lack of servicing him at this point, in making the freeware
easily available.
General public interest. I think that having better downloads of any kind
for Code-Genie, any releases at all, would be a good service for everyone.
All except for that dirty & sneaky entity that has taken over code-genie
domain and is feasting on a current monopoly of links to code-genie.
