Lexmark?

Hey, y'all,

The only comments I've ever seen here about Lexmark inkjet printers are
all negative.

Does anyone have anything at all positive to say about Lexmark inkjets?
I understand that at least some of them are made by Samsung. I'm just
curious.

My only experience is with a terrific Lexmark keyboard (which was
actually spun off from IBM). Lexmark discontinued this wonderful product
in short order, totally washed their hands of it, dumping all parts and
service on a third party who is almost impossible to do business with.
When I complained directly to Lexmark (who after all, was the
responsible party to the customer), they'd hear none of it. "Go to them;
leave us along." Bah on them.

Maybe this is all different with their printers. Maybe?

Well, I understand they write Linux drivers.

Their Windows software destroys (or at least used to) all hope of later
installing printers of other brands unless it is manually uninstalled.
(Oops, I was supposed to be saying nice things.)

They come in colorful boxes and are clean when you get them home.

I've got a cheap, re-branded Samsung laser (E-210) that's OK. I've also
always bought their ink-jets (5700, Z52, Z 65), but probably would not at
present. Why? The usual reason is cost of ink, and that's certainly
right, although I know the tricks to cut down on per-print usage. Prints
are decent if not best on the market. However, the ink runs when wetted,
which is why Consumer Reports gave them a not acceptable rating--by this
time other brands are doing better and it looks to me that Lexmark has
gotten so smug and satisfied with their cheap (if decently built)
printer/expensive ink business model that they have forgotten that the
market is a moving target and they don't hit near center anymore.

So your experience might be typical of the "new" Lexmark. It looks like
they are becoming just another re-brander.

I'm confused. On one hand, I've read that Lexmark makes their own
printers and even sells them to others under the second party's brand
name. On the other hand, I've read that Lexmark has Samsung OEM printers
to them. And that, in fact, this arrangement prohibits Samsung from
selling inkjet printers in the USA.

Can anyone unravel this?

In regard to laser printers, Lexmark both makes and sells their own
printers in the middle to high end product line, but rebrands Samsung
lasers in the low end market. They make relatively good middle to high
end laser printers.

In terms of inkjet printers, Lexmark makes their own and rebrands their
own as Dell products. I would consider neither brand to be high end
within the inkjet market.

You mean that Lexmark is (gasp!) an accursed "relabeler?"
