I'm looking at getting a Lexmark X8350 printer but I'm curious about
the fax side of things. I need a fax machine to connect to my phone
line. Can this unit tell the difference between fax and phone calls?
I want it to automatically answer the call when a fax calls, but NOT
automatically answer the call when it's a phone call. The phone can
either ring out (if no one is home to answer it), or can go to an
answer machine type of thing. Basically, I don't want to subject
callers to the "wee-wah" of the fax if we're not there to answer, but
I'm happy for the phone to ring out. Yet I need faxes to be received
when we're not there.

Does anyone know if it can do this?

a real poor choice. canon is a much better choice

Are there Canon's that can do this? I don't really mind on the brand
so long as they're not expensive and can do this (as well as print,
scan, copy, etc)

Yes there are models of Canon MFPs that can do what you are asking. Be
sure to use OEM ink in your new printer to avoid fading, clogging and to
get the best photo results. If you are just goint to use the machine
for printing faxes then you only need to worry about the clogging.
