Let me use the backspace key!!

A recent update occured in Microsoft word. I now cannot use the backspace
key to delete a highlighted section. Also, instead of overwriting
highlighted text, the program merely inserts new text as though I had not
highlighted in the first place. I find these changes to be extremely
frustrating as the delete key barely works on my computer and when I am
editing a thought, I like to be able to highlight the section and completely
write over it with my new thought. There is a lot more editing to be done
the new way. The new way, I now have to pick through my text and figure out
where it begins and where it ends. This is very frustrating and I would like
to see these "new features" kicked to the gigantic circular file in the
corner of my Office.

Go to Tools > Options > Edit and check "Typing replaces selection".

This is not a new feature, and it's unlikely that any recent update
changed it. From the number of times people ask this question, though,
it appears that Word has some way of "losing" random settings,
probably through the program's incorrect handling of registry entries.
If this happens more than once, think about using AutoNew and AutoOpen
macros like the ones at the end of
