Believe it or not, all I wanted to do was make a backup of My Documents on
my external hard drive before going on vacation. Still don't know the best
way to do that. I appreciate your help and advice.

Open your My Documents folder.
Click on any single file/folder in the listing.
Press CTRL+A.
Press CTRL+C.

Open your External driver directory listing.
Create a new folder on the driver - call it whatever you want to call it.
Open it.
Click inside it (nothing in there to click, do it anyway. heh)
Press CTRL+V.
Wait for it to finish copying, answer in the affirmative to any questions
during the copy process.

When it is done copying, properly disconnect your external hard disk drive
and do whatever it was you planned on doing.

Did you try Windows Briefcase?
