Hi,
I have 2 questions:
1. Does a freeware (free for trial) author have to have a company in order
to sell his product?
2. If so, is there any agent company help them to deal with these?
Thank you!

Hi, Peng.
Free for trial is not freeware. That's shareware.
You should try: alt.comp.shareware.authors

A company? What do you mean by "company"? Store front, employees, etc?
If so, no. All one need do to be in business is to acquire whatever
licenses are needed in the jurisdiction, pay the appropriate taxes, etc.

Deal with what? His own "company"? Anyone can hire anyone to do
whatever he wants as long as it is legal. Much better not to hire them
as agents, though, since principal (person hiring) is *totally*
responsible for the actions of his agent(s).

There's an IRS form for "Income from Business/Profession", info and
instructions in the Tax Guide...the monumentally large, obfuscated book
you can get free from aforesaid IRS.

You might want to keep a journal of income/expense, date, etc. because
taxable income is income minus costs of producing it.

Don't know if Indiana (if you are a resident) has an income tax or not,
don't think so. A local Chamber of Commerce is someplace you could ask
questions.

No. You can operate as a "sole proprietorship". You would report your
income and expenses to the I.R.S. on Form 1040 Sch-C. Check with our
city or county authorities to see if you need any kind of licence.
